Meaningful Use of Electronic Health Records

Primary Health Medical Group is not only the first health care organization in the state of Idaho to have a physician successfully attest to the Meaningful Use of electronic health records, but also have multiple physicians. 22 in fact. James Weiss, MD, a Family Physician at the Primary Health Medical Group Meridian Clinic achieved the criteria set forth under Meaningful Use by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the HITECH Act in August 2011. The other providers followed a few months later. This means that the health care provider is actively using electronic health records to improve patient care and can accurately report on health related achievements. President Obama signed the HITECH Act in February 2009 to encourage physicians and hospital providers to utilize electronic health records in a “Meaningful Way”. One of the many goals of the Act was to get health care providers reporting data in the same format so that it could be compared and analyzed to create standards for patient care and treatment plans. In order to qualify for Meaningful Use, health care providers must meet a specific set of criteria for 90 consecutive days on a certified electronic health records system.

“I’m happy to incorporate the Meaningful Use guidelines in my practice,” stated James Weiss, MD. “I believe demonstrating our effective use of electronic health records is vital to promoting cost-effective 21st century medicine. I would never dream of going back to paper charts now that I use the electronic health record. My patients love the fact that I am connected electronically to their pharmacies, their hospital records, and their personal email if they wish to set up the secure messaging system. I would encourage every physician in the United States to adopt an electronic health record and meet the Meaningful Use standards.”

“The criteria outlined in Meaningful Use is directly related to improved patient care,” said David Peterman, MD, President of Primary Health Medical Group. “Our electronic health records system has increased access for patients and improved our ability to evaluate patient care. There is less room for errors with tools such as ePrescriptions, printed information after the visit, and a single source of information. Patients can access their health records from their living rooms – even send and receive secure emails from their doctor if they have questions. The opportunities being presented to patients to take control of their health are quite remarkable.”

Primary Health Medical Group implemented eClinicalWorks electronic health records in all clinics in 2007. With the conversion to paperless electronic health records, every Primary Health patient now has one electronic chart accessible in all 11 locations. Health care providers can easily review patient histories, medications, allergies, lab work and more to provide consistent health care. The number of steps for the coordination of patient care and possibility for errors were reduced with electronic prescribing, interfaces for lab tests and radiology, and tracking of referrals.

But It's a DRY Heat

Granted, the weather in the Boise area has finally gotten warm (okay, hot). But truly, it is a DRY heat. While the rest of the country is melting (currently the temperature in St. Louis is 97F with 49% humidity - making it feel like 109F), Boise is enjoying the summer (and not to rub it in, but today's high will be 89F).

The summers in the area are hot - and you should take relevant precautions - but they are still comfortable enough to enjoy some of our valley's favorite activities. Running, biking, hiking are all very enjoyable during the first half of the day. And when it gets warmer, fishing, rafting, and (finally) floating the Boise river. It's a little later than usual, but the Boise river is now open for floating for the season.

Come and learn about the mild year round weather in the Treasure Valley - including all of the Boise area. You'll find out why so many physicians have moved to the area to call it home.

Primary Health - One of the Best Places to Work in Idaho

Primary Health has again earned the distinction of being one of the "Best Places to Work in Idaho" this year. Last year, we held the number nine slot among large employers in the state. This year, we won't know our official ranking until the Awards Presentation later in April, but we do know that we are in the top 10. This award means a great deal to us here at Primary Health because of the way it is derived. It's not a 3rd party group coming in and listening to managers about why we are great. It's a survey that every employee is invited to complete about their perceptions and attitudes about Primary Health, their work environment, benefits, etc. The surveys are completely anonymous, so employees know they can be honest in their responses. And we still come out on top. It's also important to note that ALL of our team members are invited to respond: Customer Service Representatives, Physicians, Nurses, Billing Associates - EVERYONE. And we still come out on top. Thanks to all of our team members for helping us earn this distinction. We appreciate all you do to help make Primary Health Medical Group one of the Best Places to Work in Idaho.

Emergency Departments vs. Urgent Cares

There are many situations when the Emergency Department is the right place for patients to go: serious head injuries, chest pain - true emergency situations. But research shows that time and time again many of the patients visiting the Emergency Departments at hospitals could be served at Urgent Care Clinics. And in faster time. And for less money.

The 2010 Emergency Department Pulse Report indicates that the national average total time spent in an Emergency Department is 247 minutes, or four hours and seven minutes. When compared with 2002 data, that's an increase of 31 minutes. The average time in Urgent Care centers is less than half that. And Urgent Care clinics continue to average approximately one third the cost of the average Emergency Department visit.

We're doing our part at Primary Health to educate the community about the appropriate use of Urgent Care clinics and Emergency Departments. Find out how you fit into the the mix by getting more information about Primary Health.
